Mr. Ackley was born in Orange county in 1825. After being graduated at the Chester Academy, he went to New York and entered a commercial house. When gold was discovered in California, Mr Ackley started at once for San Francisco, where he arrived in August 1849. He engaged in the hardware business for many years. About the time of the war he retired from business and came back to the east. After living for nineteen years in Goshen, he removed to Brooklyn, where he had lived for fourteen years. A widow and five children survive him.

The deceased had numerous relatives in this village He appeared in the census 1860, 1870 & 1880 in New York, United States. . Having received the ordinary opportunities of a district school education, at the age of sixteen he went into the busy world to carve out a fortune for himself. For one year he was clerk in the store of William N. White, of Newburg, and for two years following he was a clerk in his father's store at Chester. He then spent one year as a student at the Farmers' Hall Academy at Goshen, and in 1845 went to New York, where he remained for four years as book-keeper for the firm of Furman & Davis.
In 1849 he went to San Francisco, Cal., where he carried on, on his own account, successfully the hardware and tin business for six years. Returning to New York, he remained there in business until 1865, when he came to Goshen, purchased a farm of 241 acres of land, upon which he has resided ever since.
Mr. Ackley's life has been, thus far, one of activity, industry, and self-reliance, for which he has been rewarded with a fair competence.
