Marshall Wayne DUTTON was born on 22 April 1914 in Smith , Kansas.839,1751 He died on 21 September 2000 at the age of 86 in Lawrence, Douglas, Kansas, United States.839,1751 His Obituary appeared in the The Topeka Capital-Journal on 23 September 2000 in Topeka, Shawnee, Kansas, United States LAWRENCE --- Marshall Wayne Dutton, 86, Lawrence, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, at a Lawrence hospital of complications from cancer.
Mr. Dutton taught vocational agriculture in Colby in the late
1930s. During World War II, he attended officers' training in Tucson, then served as a navigator on Navy Air Force transport planes in the South Pacific. After the war he established and operated a business to improve water conservation on farms in the Norton area. In June
1947 he and his family returned to Colby, where he worked as a building contractor and sheep farmer. He joined a
direct-write insurance company in 1956, representing 13 northwest Kansas counties.
He transferred to Lawrence in 1969, and in 1979 he and his wife began the Dutton Independent Insurance Company. Upon retirement, he bought a small farm south of Lawrence and experimented with various sheep breeds to increase the incidence of multiple births.
He was born on April 22, 1914, on a farm in Smith County, the son of Clara Ackley and Thomas Moore Dutton. He attended school in Portis, and Kansas State College, where he earned a bachelor's degree in agricultural science in 1938.
He married Ethelyn Dimmitt on May 31, 1941. She survives.
Other survivors include five daughters Marsha Dutton, Athens, Ohio, Kathleen Lange, Topeka, Judith Dutton and Tamara Dutton, both of Lawrence, and Daryl Ann Dutton Cody, Topanga, Calif.; a son Bill Dutton, Pascoe, Wash.; two brothers, Kirk Dutton, Topeka, and Paul Dutton, Denver; a sister Betty Lull, Smith Center; 17 grandchildren; and 2 great-granddaughters.
Mr. Dutton was preceded in death by a grandson.
Services will be at 4:30 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Lawrence.
