Machias, Jan. 6. Announcement is made of the marriage of Miss Gertrude E. Handy of Machlas,daughter of Mrs. Robert Kennedy, to Charles M. Ackley, son of Mrs. Abbie Ackley of Cutler and the late Arthur L. Ackley.
The wedding took place, Dec. 30,at the home of the bridegroom's brother, Richard Ackley, at Lubec.
The Rev. Donald Stockford officiated.
The bride wore a teal blue gown with matching accessories. Mrs. Richard Ackley. matron of honor, wore a dress of beige crepe. They wore red rose corsages.
Richard Ackley was best man. The bride is a graduate of Machias High School and Washington State Normal School. She has been employed for several years as a telephone operator in the Machias office of the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company. She is a member of the local Methodist Church and of Machias Valley Grange.
The bridegroom, a veteran of World War II. was graduated fromWashington Academy, East Machias, and for 10 years has been postmaster at Cutler. - Gertrude Handy Ackley died Jan. 8, 1999, at a Lubec nursing home. She was born at Bar Harbor, Feb. 5, 1913.
Her early life was spent in Machias. She graduated from Machias High School in 1930 and from Washington State Normal School in 1932. She was an active member of the former Court Street Methodist Church and Machias Valley Grange. She was employed by the New England Telephone Company for 20 years. In 1950 she married Charles M Ackley and moved to Cutler. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Cutler and served as treasurer for 31 years and sang in the choir. She was a 65 year Grange member and past master and secretary of the Natural Bridge Grange (now Jacksonville Grange) She was a member of the National Grange and a life member of Machias Chapter O.E.S. She served as past matron in Sebosis and Warren Chapter. She was Past District Deputy Grand Matron of District 15.
She was predeceased by her mother, Alice Handy Kennedy; a sister, Jessie Micue Barnes; and a brother Walter Handy. In addition to her husband, Charles, she is survived by sisters-in-law, Jenny Handy of Gardner, Mass. and Barbara
McGuire of Cutler; nieces, Jeanette Davidson of Cutler, Jean Handy Rushford and Patricia Micue Eye of Eddington; nepbews, Bruce Handy of Gardner, Mass., Arthur Micue of Oklahoma City, Okla., Robert Morris of Gallatin, Tenn.; 13 grand-nieces and nephews, 10 great-grand grandnieces and nephews.
There will be no calling hours. A graveside committal service will be held at a later date.
