Age 87, 04/23/1916- 01/21/04, passed away on Wednesday. John was born the third of four children in Aberdeen, SD. He moved west with his family in the 1920’s and attended school in Seattle, WA, graduating from Ballard High, Seattle in 1935. Soon after graduation John joined the Merchant Marine and made voyages to the orient for two years before starting his career with the Northern Pacific railroad. His railroad career spanned thirty seven years and concluded in 1976 when he retired from the same chair as his father, Austin W. Ackley, who retired in 1957 as Chief Dispatcher of the Tacoma Division of the BNSF railroad. John married Norma Ungherini, of Auburn, WA, in November 1942. Son John P. was born soon afterward in December 1943. In 1950 John married Helen Rolando, a happy union that lasted until her death in 1988. John was a long time member of Fircrest Golf Club dating from 1947 through 1988 where he had many friends among the membership who shared his passion for the game. In 1990 he was remarried to Claire O’Callighan of Portland, OR and her clan of six children and twenty two grandchildren and their families. They enjoyed thirteen happy years together before Claire’s passing in February 2003. While John lived out his final days after Claire’s death he was lovingly cared for in the home of Molly, one of Claire’s daughters, and Rick Gorger of Portland. In retirement, John enjoyed life to the fullest by living seven months out of the year in Hawaii and the rest in Tacoma or Portland. In later years John and his wife Claire included Mexico as a regular destination during the winter months. John is preceded in death by his sister Helen, brother Laurence, wife Helen, and wife Claire. He is survived by his sister Elizabeth, son John P. Ackley, and granddaughters Sarah and Nicole. All during John’s life he spoke of how fortunate he felt to be blessed with good health, family, and citizenship in the United States of America. He kept to his responsibilities as a good provider and a good citizen. He always tried to be compassionate and generous to others. Many a person could relate how he helped them obtain employment when they were down. As a child of the Great Depression he knew hard times and hard work. Those times made John appreciate all the goodness that life offered. He marveled at the sweep of change that he had witnessed over the span of his life. Always regarded as a consummate gentleman, he possessed a great sense of humor, was a good golfer, dancer, and card player who could pour a mean drink and hold his liquor too. He stated near the end that he had no regrets for his long, full life and was ready to pass on. His smile, humor, kindness and generosity will be missed. A memorial will be announced at a later date in this newspaper.
