Roy Ackley, Driven Insane by Brooding. Writes Notes and Then Ends His Life
FOUXD DEAD IN ROOM
A scribbled verse and a few Incoherent notes, fantasies of a disordered mind, found near the dead body of 29-year-old. Roy Ackley yesterday morning in a room at 2013 Fillmore street, told of the tragedy which led him to end his life by suicide. Steady losses at the race track, which had left him. with but 20 cents in his pocket, drove him suddenly insane, and Wednesday night, alone in his room with the haunting shapes born of his own distorted fancy, he laughed and planned, penciled his meaningless messages and then ended It all with death. . Mrs. Charles Vosmer. in whose rooming-house Ackley had made his home for three days, discovered the odor of gas coming from his room at 8 o'clock yesterday morning, and going to the door with her son. Richard, was the first to find his body. Near It on the floor was an empty morphine bottle, showing that the young suicide had made doubly sure in his purpose. Around the room were scattered printed race track entry sheets, their backs scribbled over with notes addressed to his mother and to Agnes Kidder Downs at the De Earle Hotel. Olympia. ash. It was' learned yesterday that Miss Downs has been Ackley's sweetheart since childhood.
On a card but a few Inches from Ackley's lifeless fingers were written the verses which mutely testified that his last thought had been of this love. They read: "There Is a time to mourn, A time to be sad, A time to be merry . And a time to be glad; And. a time' to coo. And a time to spoon. My love, with you."
"To Agnes." read a note in a. memorandum book, on the leaves of which were bloody finger prints, "I kill myself here, you bet your life! I broke the bottle in opening morphine and cut my finger.- I am now going to, take morphine and blow out the gas. Good-by, Agnes. They say I am crazy, but I am not. No, I know what I am. doing, you bet. Agnes, I love you. I have taken the dope. Good-by, girl. I am tired of myself." f . > '" . On a postcard addressed to Miss Agnes Downs was written: "To th" girl I love more than others - Mother will tell you all. I pass, into eternity, with love. I die as I lived - a man - not a mouse or a long-tailed rat."
